RIVER MUSEUM
Point Pleasant River Museum
The Point Pleasant River Museum and Learning Center focuses on river life and commercial enterprise on the Ohio and Kanawha Rivers. The museum has many displays and video demonstrations. Special guests will highlight topics such as great floods, boat construction, sternwheel steamers, river disasters and the local river industry's contribution to World War II. The museum also offers a pilot house simulator, aquarium and a research library. The building which houses the Point Pleasant River Museum has had a connection to the river since at least 1854 when it was established as a mercantile by Robert Mitchell. It has also served as a grocery store to accommodate local residents as well as river traffic via the dock just a few yards away at the end of Main Street. The last owner who used the location as a mercantile was the H. G. Nease Company. Many residents to this day know the Museum building as the "Old Nease Building." In the 1940s, a local company bought the property and used the structure as storage space. In 1990, the company Hartley, Hartley & Hartley, Inc., donated the building to the City of Point Pleasant for the purpose of creating a River Museum. After many years of hard work, by numerous volunteers, the Point Pleasant River Museum opened its doors to the public on May 1, 2003. For more info, visit pprivermuseum.com
RIVER WALK MURALS
Learn About Our History
The mural, painted by world-renowned artist, Robert Dafford, is located on the south side of the floodwall at the Fourth Street entrance to the Point Pleasant Riverfront Park. This mural depicts the Battle of Point Pleasant, fought on October 10, 1774. The Shawnee Indians, lead by Chief Cornstalk, attacked the newly arrived Virginia Militia, lead by Colonel Andrew Lewis just after daybreak. The battle lasted throughout the day. As darkness approached, the Shawnees pulled back across the Ohio River and made their way back to their village near what is now Chillicothe, OH. The Virginians pursued their attackers and negotiated a peace treaty at Camp Charlotte on October 25, 1774.
This mural is the first in a series that will provide an avenue to the past to capture a glimpse of the rich history of Point Pleasant and the surrounding valley. When completed, there will be a chronological history lesson where school groups and tourists can come and re-live the history in both audio and visual presentations

WV STATE FARM MUSEUM
About
Buildings of historical value have been moved and rebuilt on the grounds. You will find log cabins and an early farmhouse, an operational 19th century blacksmith shop, turn-of-the-century doctor's and newspaper offices, the first Lutheran Church west of the Allegheny Mountains, and more.
A work in progress, the Museum attractions change from year-to-year. The collection of artifacts continues and building restoration is ongoing.
No visit would be complete without a stop to our country store, which features food products, crafts, and collectibles.
Since we are an operating farm museum, we try to maintain a few appropriate farm animals. While things change on a farm, at the time of this update we had horses, chickens, donkeys, a goat and a llama.

AF KISAR HOUSE PROJECT
About
ake one look at the three-story brick home and you might think it plays host to a trove of treasurers. Take one step inside and you'll know it's true. Intricately hand-carved woodwork frames the doors as you step inside the house and from room to room, 15 in all. Each of the 12 fireplaces, many made of marble, boasts the same detailed woodwork, and ornate, imported tile covers many of the floors and walls. But the details that make this home so unique do not end there.
One special feature of the home is the parquet and carved ceilings, some of which were designed to be removed if there was a threat of high water - a very real possibility for downtown Point Pleasant, prior to the construction of the floodwall. There also are numerous pieces of antique furniture, such as a tiger-oak rocking chair and a rosewood piano, that are sprinkled throughout the rooms.
And then there's Hezekiah, the giant griffin carved out of golden oak, that stands guard in the foyer!
Located at 105 Third Street, in Point Pleasant, the house is truly has a unique presence. It was built in the late 1890s for A. F. Kisar, a jeweler; In 1962 Wayne and Margaret Kincaid purchased the home and after several years of extensive repairs and remodeling, moved in and made it their home. The Kincaid's operated a family-run grocery store on Main Street just a few yards away on Main Street.
Mrs. Kincaid would often open her house to visitors and loved to five tours. Her fondest dream was that, after her passing the home could be turned into a museum for all to tour and enjoy. That dream appeared to be all but impossible, when her heirs failed to find a benefactor. Main Street Point Pleasant, recognizing the potential for the home to become one of the key attractions in its downtown revitalization program, proposed to the Hartley's, a local successful family business that it purchase the home and donate it to the City.
In 2008 the transfer of ownership was completed and now Main Street Point Pleasant has taken on the task of restoring the home and preparing it to become a showcase of early architecture and integrating it into the story of the rich history of this river city.
The challenge is enormous! The slate roof needs replaced. The heating system requires an upgrade to an allseason temperature/humidity control, to protect the contents. The windows need replaced with a period-correct design. The foyer that was added next to the floodwall needs to be removed. The outbuildings need to be demolished and a period garden with parking needs to be constructed.
